Quick back story:
Mike and James had a canvas primed for last years Art Battle. Mike was attacked and put in the hospital the night before the battle from serious head trauma. So James fought bravely by himself while Mike was in the hospital. I saw Mike about two weeks later and he was in surprisingly good spirits & we talked about the tragedy of his giant primed canvas laying around cold and dingy white. So I told him he should just come do their Art Battle project in my space.

I appreciate them being the first of this series, they're such talented dudes and I'm one of their biggest fans.

I think these series of documented vids will be the next layer that will create more sense of this whole collective/collaboration of artists I've been working with since the first Good Wood Show in 2007.

I have to say this is one of the few other skate deck shows I've really appreciated other than Good Wood. The premise of the show is centered around the original shape of skateboards when they first hit mass production. The decks are custom cut from a solid piece of wood and laser etched on the top. I'm currently bidding on Amber B. Dianda's Deck. I originally was going for Aaron Harowitz's deck but I've been outbid on that one.

I'm super late on this post and the bidding for these decks ends tonight but I hope it does well and I've done my part. Hopefully karma will come back and Good Wood will see good success now.

Good Wood x Stay True x Philly

BACK FOR MORE GOOD!
The Good Wood Exhibit is back and will exhibit in Philly this Fall at Slingluff Gallery. There will be a silent auction for the custom decks to benefit a great organization called Stay-True. Nir Sar started Stay True In 2005, as a Philadelphia public school teacher, struck by the utter helplessness his students expressed about the socioeconomic conditions they faced each day. While the students yearned for progress and change, they did not have the information, skills, or confidence needed to become actively engaged in a process of social advancement. These observations have led to the founding of STAY TRUE, an organization truly inspired by those students who, despite their environments, have decided to dedicate their lives to helping others.

So Jonathan Slingluff is more than happy to host the exhibit in his beautiful space so I'll be taking a trip out to Philly next month to make it happen. A few artists involved in the show:

Some graffiti "artists" did some awfully thoughtful throw ups covering the outside of Cave. Vince, Jeff & I felt we had to reclaim the space so we did some of our own throw ups back over top of their ugly work to make the space even more of a mess. Please take your thinking with your graffiti a little further Detroit. I'm sure there's a bigger fight out there and an art space tucked away on the third floor of building four of the Russell isn't that fight......bitches

I doubt there isn't anyone that isn't a bit excited for this or at least excited for the people that are excited for this. The sneak peak images I was catching online before seeing the trailer were looking amazing and it appeared this movie was going to be done right and I think the trailer has just reassured those feelings. Plus, the fantastic acoustic version of wake up, by Arcade Fire helps make it the enjoyable 1:59 of adventure it is.

I recently downloaded Al's record Old Patterns after speaking to him about it one night at a local watering hole in Ferndale. I use to listen to his old band Rescue back when I was in High School so as a musician he has sentimental value to me. I absolutely love the new psychedelic folk rock he is making as a solo musician now. I really enjoy his take on folk and the different elements and melodic vocals and sounds he brings into his songs. The other musicians opening up for Al are extremely talented friends of mine. Steve Branstrom is the frontman of the band Monument, Monument. We've been friends for years and I've always wanted to put together a show for him. Lately he's been writing some of his own stuff on a Takamine acoustic guitar I lent him years ago and later decided to let him adopt (for personal reasons). The most talented well-rounded musician I know and some of the strongest vocal chords you'll ever hear.
Julian Viksand (CJA) is a long time friend and talented folk musician. He's been playing music forever and burns holes in guitars everytime he picks one up. He's heavily inspired by Nordic scenery and culture as well as Fall months and snowfall.

Whoa! These are gnarly. I must admit that the birds are really interesting looking and I think something like that might be more appropriate in a gallery, but I'm not judging. I've utilized a taxidermy bird before in a piece and don't feel the right to say how taxidermy birds should be used. Kirsten informed of this taxidermy fashion. Very interesting, thanks Kirst!

From Paris Haute Couture Week. The "Dovima" shoe by Roger Vivier is made of gilded silk mesh, 24kt gold mesh and rose pink dyed taxidermy birds with gold and crystal heads. They're made to order and take up to three months for delivery.

SHOE HUNTIN'

For the custom (Vans) sneaker show recently I collaborated with Nate Morgan and we had a blast with our hunting theme. Nate strung up his bow and we headed to the nearest woods to hunt us some shoe. We strung the shoes up 20 yards away in a tree and each of us took shots at them. It was my first time shooting a bow and arrow and I hit the shoes 2nd try! If you've never shot a bow before I suggest you try it! I'm not encouraging hunting any creatures by any means, only inanimate objects. It's definitely one of my new favorite things to do. So anyways, Nate and I shot at the shoes for an hour or so and each hit them about 4 times. We then went to Chiipss Skate Shop to photograph our 10 pt bucks. We then took a trip to Michaels for the plaques and put a nice ebony stain on those and mounted shoes and with wire laced the antlers. The true sneaker heads understand how crucial it is to get the kill on the day of a drop.

The theme of the show is inspired by the Mexican holiday “Day of the Dead.” The artist is asked to pay tribute to the death of something of meaning and inspiration, and certainly is not limited to human loss. Included with the shoes will be a 12x18 additional work that will accompany the shoes and help narrate their ideas. Shying away from the standard day of the dead subject matter, artists are expected to reach beyond the holiday's traditional symbols and motif. Halloween costumes are encouraged, and expected to push creative limits.

Plenty to eat and drink and a costume contest held during the night with goodies to give away to winners. DJ Johnny Mac will keep the vinyl coming all night so tell you’re momma you won’t be coming home.

Man, I would have been psyched to make it out this show in Boston! I visit Leo Espinosa's blog every few days just to see what he's got cooking and he usually never fails at satisfying my jones. His use of color and his style blows me away and the man is just mad talented. He emailed me the other week and sent me some images of the progress he was making on the show and I knew people were going to be in for a treat.
